In general, we are cautious about interpreting strong, widespread patterns evoked by odorants that are predicted to have low volatility. Our experience with pentadecane has shown that all but the most ventral areas of activity can be due to contaminants present in the preparations of these long, hydrophobic molecules. The supplier indicated that the material may contain up to 20% of contaminating material, which increases our concern about the impact of these contaminants. Nonetheless, the evoked activity pattern may be relevant to any associated odor perception. |
